NCCEFT Quarterly Meeting: EFT and Grief

Presented by:

Jamie Bachman, LCSW, Certified EFT Therapist

and Sarah Jolley, RN, MA, LMFT

SUBJECT:

As EFT therapists, we work to help couples strengthen their attachment bond to their partners, to support them in knowing deep inside that their partner is accessible and responsive when needed. But what about when loss is imminent: how do couples face end-of-life challenges, and how might we help them strengthen their bonds while also preparing to say goodbye? And what about when grief from previous relationships impact the strength of the bond with a new partner? Grief also emerges powerfully in our work with couples who have lost a child, and deeply impacts their attachment.

Grief and loss are experiences we all face, and they have a huge impact on the security of our attachment to those important to us. This presentation offered by two former hospice workers will explore these core challenges to relational bonds through didactic and small group activities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe how a life-threatening illness or loss impacts EFT work with couples;

2.  Describe typical coping strategies used by those with a life-threatening illness or loss as well as the relationship of those strategies to our EFT model of attachment position; and

3.  Explore these ideas through small group discussion of case studies, with an opportunity in a safe setting to explore self-of-therapist issues that arise in doing grief work
