Granularity and Specificity: Key Ingredients in Move 2 of the EFT Tango with a Mexican Couple

In this presentation, we will watch an EFT certification tape with a Mexican couple done in Spanish (subtitled into English) by Argentinean EFT Supervisor and Trainer in Training, Natalia Gilabert. In this lovely session you will see how granularity and specificity serves to deepen a couple’s experience. You will see how the EFT therapist lingers, how she validates and repeats until she has a clear emotional message prior to enacting it.
The U.S. culture continues to transform into a multicultural community in which diverse ethnic groups are growing. We know it is essential for us as EFT clinicians to 1) respectfully lean in to validate these differences and 2) explore the meanings of differences and similarities rather than make assumptions based on ethnicity and race when working with our couples.
During this presentation we will be watching a lovely Stage One video by clinical psychologist and EFT Trainer-in-Training Natalia Gilabert who resides in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In this video she is working with a Mexican couple from Southern California and she will be sharing with us some of the couple’s traumas that were directly related to immigration and poverty that negatively impacted their relationship. This session was part of Natalia’s application to become an EFT Trainer for Argentina. It has been subtitled into English. We will be watching and breaking into groups to discuss and share impressions of what was observed around cultural differences when EFT is being conducted in another language, and will be coming back for a large group discussion around EFT interventions, specificity, and cultural implications in Stage One.
Cultural differences with our couples are subjective, complex, and dynamic, and based on that, how do we open up dialogues around asking about the meanings and importance (or not) that couples ascribe to their cultural differences? This dynamic presentation will invite audience participation and we will be very interested in hearing from our members who identify with any type of cultural, ethnic, or racial differences into what they consider important nuances to be addressed by therapists when in session.
The pursuit of cultural competency is a lifelong learning process and this presentation will be an invitation to lean in, listen, share, and learn with the addition of the newest RISSSSC “S for Specific” (soft, slow, & simple) in EFT.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this event participants will be able to:
1. Describe key elements of assembling and deepening affect in the EFT Tango that includes emotional presence, attunement, safety, curiosity, specificity, and timing in preparation for the engaged encounters.
2. Explain and discuss ways to stay focused when couples are struggling in session by backing up, slicing things thinner, and trying again.
3. Describe cultural sensitivity considerations that emphasize the therapist's understanding of a couple's background, ethnicity, and belief system.

Sam Jinich, PhD, Certified EFT Trainer and Supervisor. Sam Jinich, Ph.D is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist, Supervisor and Trainer. Sam is the Director of the San Francisco Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy (SFCEFT) and the Instituto de Terapia Focalizada en las Emociones (ITFE). Sam is one of the Founders of the Northern California Community for EFT (NCCEFT).
Sam has been in Private Practice in San Francisco for over 20 years. Sam leads the Hold me Tight Workshop for Couples with Michelle Gannon, Ph.D. in San Francisco, Tiburon, Esalen Institute and Costa Rica. Sam is bilingual in Spanish and also leads EFT Externships and Core Skills in Spanish in Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain and Panama.
Natalia Gilabert is a clinical psychologist in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a Certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor and Trainer in Training. Natalia first began training in EFT in 2015 and became a Certified EFT Supervisor in 2020. She was the 2020 recipient of the John Douglas Award by ICEEFT for her service bringing EFT to South America. Along with her colleague Silvina Goso, she co-facilitates Hold Me Tight workshops and is responsible for coordinating all EFT trainings in Argentina. She was selected to be a therapist in the first EFT Clinical Trial in Spanish. This is a multi-site international research study with therapists from Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Argentina and Spain sponsored by the University of Navarra in Spain. Natalia has been in private practice since 2002. She teaches and supervises in Spanish and Portuguese and is active in helping to build EFT communities in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Brazil and Peru.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This training is appropriate for mental health practitioners who work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy. Level is introductory to intermediate.
COST:
This training is free to members, who will receive 2 Continuing Education (CE) credit at no charge. This training is available to non-members for $10, and CE credit is available for an additional $25. Prepayment is made online through the website at the time of registration.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences;

NCCEFT PROGRAM GRIEVANCE AND REFUND POLICY:
The Northern California Community for Emotionally Focused Therapy (NCCEFT) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. NCCEFT will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the CPA PAS CE Program Director in consultation with the Board of Directors (Steering Committee).
While NCCEFT works to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which will require intervention and/or action on the part of NCCEFT. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such complaints.
When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:
1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.
2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:
a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or
b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or
c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.
Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.
3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.
REFUND AND ATTENDANCE POLICY:
In the event that a program presentation has an attendance fee, CANCELLATIONS should be made 48 hours prior to the event.
