Can You See Me?

Providing Emotionally Focused Therapy to Middle Eastern and Immigrant Couples

A special interactive panel presentation by NCCEFT and RAHA, Iranian American Nonprofit Mental Health Organization in Northern California

Presented by:

Jila Behnad, MFT; Nadia Ashjaee, MFT; and

 Parastoo Mosadeghi

SUBJECT:

California holds one of the largest populations of Middle Eastern couples in the nation, many of whom have settled in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and the East Bay.  With the stresses of recent times and the decreasing stigma of mental health therapy among this population, increasing numbers of immigrant couples are reaching out for couples therapy. When we consider attachment to a culture, then immigration can be an attachment injury that will show up in a couple’s cycle. EFT is an ideal fit due to our beliefs in connection and belonging as universal needs.

In this interactive and experimental presentation we will look at what is unique about these populations and how we can use our skills as EFT Therapists to meet the needs of all couples impacted by immigration and upheaval.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

- Through an EFT lens, become more familiar with couples challenges unique to immigrants.

- Gain a better understanding of the trauma and loss of immigration in this population and how to integrate that important piece into a couple’s pursue withdraw cycle of disconnect.

- Using EFT to work with challenges caused by different intergenerational cultural values and needs.

- As attachment therapists, gain a deeper awareness of understanding multi-cultural communities and Iranian-American cultural expectations of therapy.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:

a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.
