Embodying EFT:

Enhancing the Somatic Dimension

Presented via Zoom

(Zoom link to be provided in Reminder emails)

Subject:

Our emotions and the drive to seek secure attachment are rooted in the body.  We come out of the womb designed to seek physical and emotional proximity—to read and respond to others. The experiences we have in our families, communities, institutions, and society at large, shape how our bodies perceive and respond or react. Our sense of security changes based on who we have near and the cues we receive. Our sensations, facial expressions, tone of voice, and overall body language change depending on how secure we feel in a given moment. In couples therapy, this has a big effect on how accessible and responsive partners are to each other.

These responses, especially reactivity, are often outside of our awareness.  Inherent in the EFT model is the practice of slowing down to invite deeper awareness of internal experience. In this presentation we will offer practices for you to deepen into the somatic aspects of EFT, both for yourself as therapist and for working with your clients.  As EFT therapists, when we improve our somatic skills of tracking and sensing our own bodies, we settle into ourselves; we become steadier, more responsive, and more reassuring to our clients.  A somatic approach is useful for helping partners unpack and “make sense” of their reactivity.  In EFT, when we focus on the somatic elements, we gain an opportunity to mine the richness of desirable body states that occur when partners connect with themselves and each other.  Over the long run, this builds the security they are seeking.

Learning Objectives:

1.  Develop the ability to use our own body awareness as therapists to deepen the EFT process.

2. Practice tracking clients somatically.

3. Help clients become aware of the somatic level of their interactions including the somatic cues they respond to.

4.  Learn to offer somatic resourcing to promote the integration of enactments and relationship security.

Presenters:

Leslie Kirby, LMFT is an EFT Certified therapist with over 25 years of experience in somatic psychotherapy. Her EFT couples work is informed by experiential models such as Hakomi, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, NARM, and AEDP. She believes that our somatic experiences and relationships are formed within our social and cultural contexts—most of it without our conscious knowledge. As a white student entering graduate school she was struck by how white the field was and began wondering how this impacts psychological theories and work with clients. In 1994 she wrote her thesis to explore this question—White Shadows: The Unconscious Aspects of White Privilege. She’s still exploring this question and knows she is a fish who can’t see the water, but also knows you can see a lot more if you pay attention, listen deeply, and allow yourself to be vulnerable. She’s a long-time dancer and has learned most of what she knows through her body.

Lisa A Kully, LMFT is a Certified EFT Therapist and Certified Hakomi Therapist with over 25 years of experience.  Lisa currently sees about half couples and half individual adults in her gratifying Rockridge psychotherapy practice.  The attachment perspective has made sense to Lisa since she was about five-years-old, and the discovery of EFT in the early 2000's was a "coming home."  For many years she has explored her love of embodiment, clinically and personally, through Hakomi Mindfulness-based Therapy, Focusing, Authentic Movement and Buddhist/Vipassana practice, as well as dance and the many adventures of parenting a lively and emotionally intelligent daughter.  Lisa loves to write and looks forward to getting back to her blog about the practical and philosophical elements of psychotherapy.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

1. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:

a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.
