About This Training |
Subject: Emotions tell us where to focus our attention and they are also our most important tool to bring about change in our clients. In EFT, vulnerable emotions are accessed, explored, and expanded to facilitate client shifts toward more adaptive integrated emotion and need expression in relationships. This involves greater experiential involvement in therapy as clients focus inward on their meaning-making process. As a client’s level of experiential involvement deepens, the client’s discourse shifts from superficial and impersonal to more internal self-referenced statements. Deeper levels of engagement have been associated with positive and successful therapy outcomes in EFT for couples (Johnson & Greenberg, 1988; Makinen & Johnson, 2006).Evoking vulnerability in our clients requires that we remain finely attuned to their underlying emotional and physiological experience. Integrating both attachment principles and brain science has led therapists to understand that social relationships fundamentally shape how our brains develop, construct reality and adapt to psychological stressors throughout life. It is through the communication of emotions that attachment experiences organize the brain. An emotionally rich connection with another person can change both brains. In this presentation we will discuss how accessing and opening ourselves to stimuli that impacts us emotionally can prime and fine tune our emotional capacity to resonate better with our clients.
Learning Objectives: A) Participants will describe how Attachment Theory principles and advancement in brain science supports the importance of developing greater attunement skills.
B) Participants will be able to discuss and explain core therapeutic practices in EFT to attune to and evoke attachment emotions, longings and fears.
C) Participants will develop and demonstrate attunement skills through didactic instruction, evocative music, video clips, poetry and experiential exercises and consider whether as therapists their own experiential involvement deepens their client’s discourse and in turn shifts it from the superficial and impersonal to more heartfelt expressions of vulnerability.
