DESCRIPTION:
Within our psychotherapy clinical communities there are profound training inequalities associated with African American clients. This has created a critical need to integrate more cultural factors into our work with our clients. This two day training will be a phenomenal opportunity to lean into clinical excellence around cultural factors in Emotionally Focused Therapy.
This event will be a safe way to courageously engage with colleagues around 1) race matters, 2) EFT video demonstrations and discussions with Black clients and 3) exploring our internal worlds associated with cultural identity.
This presentation is appropriate for mental health professionals who work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy. Level is introductory to intermediate.
Come take this richly rewarding training journey with us. Come walk with us as we deepen our understanding of cultural influences impacting Black clients and beyond through an EFT lens. Our clinical skills will expand as we learn more about our Black clients' intrapsychic and interpersonal worlds.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
A). Describe and discuss three different factors associated with cultural humility.
B).Demonstrate and use at least three different ways to process race-matters in therapy.
C). Describe and discuss how race impacts the negative cycle of Black couples.
D). Successfully demonstrate the integration of cultural and race-related matters both in Stage One and Stage Two interventions.
E.) Apply a cultural lens of humility to incorporate cultural values and de-center majority belief into the EFT process.
F.) Discuss and demonstrate how Self of the Therapist growth can lead to the development of cultural humility and thus positively impact the therapeutic alliance and EFT interventions with Black clients and people of color.
PRESENTERS:
Dr. Feion Villodas is a clinical psychologist and serves as a clinical supervisor for one of the top Clinical Psychology programs in the nation, SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Villodas is also the Executive Director of Graduate Life and Diversity and a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University. As the Director of Graduate Student Diversity, she develops and facilitates training on diversity, equity, and inclusion for SDSU graduate students and faculty. She also supports faculty and staff engaged in hiring, diversity planning, and other diversity initiatives. Her research focuses on mental and behavioral health disparities among African-Americans and Latinx populations. She is particularly interested in acculturation, cultural competence, community-based participatory research approaches, and the adaptation and implementation of effective treatments for culturally diverse populations.
Dr. Paul Guillory is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the Clinical Science Program, Psychology Department. He has taught courses on Emotionally Focused Therapies at U.C. Berkeley. He is certified trainer, supervisor, and therapist of Emotionally Focused Therapy. He is the author of “Emotionally Focused Therapy with African American Couples: Love Heals,” Routledge, August 2021. Dr. Guillory has presented at a number of recent workshops including “Emotionally Focused Therapy in a time of Racial Reckoning” Couple & Family Institute of New England, Spring Symposium, “Race and Couples Therapy Conference,” Eikenberg Academy For Social Justice, July 2021, and “Deep Roots: Attachment & Culture, LA Center of EFT, November 2021. He has recently produced two EFT training videos that dynamically integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy with a cultural lens for working with race-matters in couple’s therapy. He is the former chairperson of the Northern California Community of Emotionally Focused Therapy. Dr. Guillory was the psychological consultant to the Oakland Raiders professional football team and the National Football League for 14 years. He has also been a consultant to the Sacramento Kings professional basketball team, and is a selected provider for the National Basketball Players Association. He served as Director of the Center for Family Counseling in Oakland California for ten years. He is a life-time member of the Association of Black Psychologists. And he is a life-time member of the USA Masters Track & Field Association. He has been in private practice in Oakland California for over 30 years.
Dr. Zemed Berhe Zemed Berhe, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor that currently works at San Diego State University. She earned her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall University, with a special emphasis in Multicultural Psychology. Dr. Berhe trained at the New Jersey Veterans Affairs for her pre-doctoral internship and completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Veterans Affairs in Long Beach, with a specialized focus in trauma-related disorders and individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation, suicidality, and interpersonal issues. She has specialized training in trauma-focused treatments and extensive experiences in working with diverse populations, with special emphasis in addressing the mental well-being of people of African descent. Her research and clinical interests include trauma, racial/ethnic identity development, acculturation, bicultural stress, Black women’s health, and addressing health disparities that continue to marginalize communities of color. As a consultant, she has provided various training workshops and presentations with different organizations and communities addressing trauma, stress/anxiety management, refugee mental health, diversity, equity and inclusion, and providing culturally competent care. Dr. Berhe continues to work within the larger EFT community and is one of the contributors for Tuning into Trauma 2.0. She is also the co-founder of the Black EFT group. She is bilingual in Tigrinya and English.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This training is appropriate for mental health practitioners who work with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy.

NCCEFT PROGRAM GRIEVANCE AND REFUND POLICY:
The Northern California Community for Emotionally Focused Therapy (NCCEFT) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. NCCEFT will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the CPA PAS CE Program Director in consultation with the Board of Directors (Steering Committee).
While NCCEFT works to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which will require intervention and/or action on the part of NCCEFT. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such complaints.
When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:
1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.
2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:
a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or
b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or
c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.
Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.
3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.
REFUND AND ATTENDANCE POLICY:
In the event that a program presentation has an attendance fee, CANCELLATIONS are subject to a $50.00 processing fee and must be received 14 days prior to be eligible for a refund.
