Healing Attachment Injuries with Emotionally Focused Therapy
Presented by:
Sam Jinich, Ph.D., Certified EFT Trainer
SUBJECT:
Negative attachment-related events, particularly abandonments and betrayals, often cause seemingly irreparable damage to close relationships. Many partners who are struggling to repair their relationship will enter therapy to bring closure to such events, and to restore lost intimacy and trust. During the therapy process, however, these events often reemerge in an alive and intensely emotional manner, much like a traumatic flashback, and can overwhelm the injured partner, the partner responsible for causing the injury, and the therapist. When the other partner then fails to respond in a reparative, reassuring manner, or when the injured spouse cannot accept such reassurance, the injury is compounded. As the couple experiences failure in their attempts to move beyond such injuries and to repair the bond between them, their despair and alienation deepen. In this presentation, we will review the unique trauma that results from attachment injuries. We will review the steps that EFT therapists can follow to bring healing and resolution to the injuries. The presentation will include lecture, a video demonstration of Sue Johnson working with a couple that had an attachment injury related to a miscarriage, and we will have an opportunity to practice some of the steps by participating in an experiential role play.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
a) Participants will learn research supported methods of attachment repair and forgiveness.
b) Participants will be able to describe a six-step model of forgiveness and will learn when to apply the steps to healing an attachment injury.
c) Participants will be able to explain how a lack of emotionally supportive responsiveness by a loved one at a moment of vulnerability can color a whole relationship.
d) Participants will practice through role plays with other participants how to explore the experience of the injury and how to set-up an enactment.
