The Joy of Sex: A Therapists’ Guide to Sex and Self of Therapist in EFT

Presented by:
Adam Eigner, PhD, Certified EFT Therapist
and Margaret Peterson, LMFT, Advanced EFT Therapist

SUBJECT:
As Emotionally Focused Therapists we know more now than ever before about the science of love and the science of sexuality, but what about the interplay between sexuality, EFT, and Self of the Therapist? Addressing sexuality and sexual problems is integral to our work with many couples, and often uncomfortable for therapists.  EFT provides organizing principles for addressing sexuality, giving us a map even as we acquire knowledge of specific issues and techniques. From an EFT perspective, we know it is often accessibility, responsiveness, and attunement - or not - that can impact the connection that comes from making love, and that attending to our Self of Therapist issues and following the EFT map facilitates this process. This presentation will focus on specific topics in sexuality including Low/No Sex Couples, Sexual Dysfunctions, Sexual Trauma, Porn Addiction/Infidelity, Sexual Diversity, and methods for deepening into EFT and Self of Therapist principles when working with these issues.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will:
1) Be able to describe three common self of the therapist triggers and action tendencies in relation to sexual content and sexual identity in couples.

2) Be able to identify three behavioral interventions to use with the three specific sexual topics discussed.

3) Be able to explain how expanding the self of the therapist definition to include transparency of the self at best helps improve clinical attunement particularly with sensitive topics such as sexual issues.

PRESENTERS:
Adam Eigner, PhD
is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified EFT therapist practicing in the Bay Area for over 20 years.  His career journey started with an interest in gender and violence, working with sexual abuse survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence..  He served on the Alameda County Domestic Violence Committee and the Best Practices Committee at Kaiser Permanente helping write regional guidelines on Intimate Partner Abuse.  As he encountered the work of John Gottman and Barry McCarthy, then Sue Johnson, his work transitioned to promoting functional relationships and sexuality.  For the last several years EFT has been at the center of his training, and his practice in Emeryville and San Francisco has been in the intersection for couples and individuals around relational and sexual issues.  Adam received his BA in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1987.  His doctorate was received from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1995.  He currently serves as the Membership Coordinator for NCCEFT.

Margaret Petersen, LMFT is a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in Pleasanton, CA. She completed her undergraduate work at UT Southwestern Medical Center and her masters from The California Institute for Integral Studies. Her clinical background includes many years transitioning from neuropsychological assessment to present day psychotherapy. She is informed by her practice of Tibetan Buddhism that began in 1993 and aligns with ongoing self of the therapist work. Through a transpersonal lens, Margaret specializes in EFT with couples and families and emotionally focused depth work with individuals of all genders. She is a member of the NCCEFT Program Committee and feels such gratitude for this vibrant community of fellowship. She has Advanced training in EFT.
