    Compulsive Behaviors:

    Using Harm Reduction & Motivational

    Interviewing in EFCT

    Presented by:

Mena Zaminsky, PsyD, LMFT & John Wiskind, LCSW, MPH

    When: May 10, 2025

    Time: 10am to 1pm

Where: The Calvin Room at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, 2407 Dana Street, Berkeley, CA 94704

    SUBJECT:

Do you feel anxious when substance use or other compulsive behaviors come up in session? At those times, it can feel like the session is in free fall. This training is intended to give you some practical strategies to tip the balance towards couples sharing when compulsive behaviors are at play. You don’t need to be an “expert in addictions” to work with clients who share compulsive behaviors. In fact, many of our client’s struggle with compulsive behaviors but don’t necessarily feel comfortable sharing that with us.  Clients often sense our discomfort or sense our feelings of being deskilled in this area. We will explore Prochaska & Diclemente’s Transtheoretical Model Of Change, interventions for each stage of change, Drug, Set & Setting and and other practical Harm Reduction strategies to use in your EFCT sessions to help you place the compulsive use within the cycle.

    AIMS:

    • Increase participants’ comfort asking about and working with substance and behavioral compulsions as they appear in couple’s therapy

    • Deepen participants' understanding of the Stages of Change model, and gain clarity about what interventions are most appropriate at each stage

    • Expand participants’ knowledge of and comfort with practical applications of Motivational Interviewing in the EFCT setting

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    1. Describe Prochaska & Diclemente’s Stage of Change Model of Behavior Change

    2. Identify three interventions that can be applied to each stage of change within the Stages of Change model

    3. State two ways in which Harm Reduction principles can be applied in EFCT with compulsive behaviors

    4. Demonstrate two practical applications of Motivational Interviewing & Harm Reduction in the EFT Tango

NCCEFT will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants.  The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the CPA PAS CE Program Director in consultation with the Board of Directors (Steering Committee).

While NCCEFT works to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which will require intervention and/or action on the part of NCCEFT. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such complaints.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

    1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

    2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:

    a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or

    b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or

    c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

    3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.

    REFUND AND ATTENDANCE POLICY:

In the event that a program presentation has an attendance fee, CANCELLATIONS should be made 48 hours prior to the event.
